1035 Exchange:

1035 exchange refers to the provision of the US tax code which allows investors to transfer accumulated funds in one life insurance policy, endowment or annuity policy to another without incurring a tax liability.

Certain guidelines must be met to take advantage of the 1035 exchange provision. For example, an endowment qualifies for 1035 exchange status only if the maturity date of the replacement endowment is no later than the maturity date of the endowment being replaced.

There are many reasons an investor may seek to initiate a 1035 exchange. Access to higher interest rates is one reason for a 1035 exchange. A change in investment strategy or goals could trigger a 1035 exchange.

Some investors initiate a 1035 exchange to take advantage of improved benefits or features offered by the replacement asset.
